Do you know what I've noticed, I've accidentally turned my story to Bridgeton but with kpop TT
Well, to be fair, I haven't watched it, but maybe I will. Idk it looked too... white people basic drama, but I might at least try an episode even if the romance looks trash.
But yeah what I was working on was making every chapter named after a song. So like I'd put the instrumental of those songs on loop when reading through the chapter. The song doesn't have to be exact with the lyrics but at least the general idea is similar.
And then I thought about it, and an orchestra version or an acoustic version of those songs is so PERFECT. Not only kpop songs, there's a lot more pop and I realized... those covers exist.
BRIDGETON DID IT. but idk why, many sounds so cringe and bad. Like why?
Even Taylor swift songs ?!?! Like IT'S the vibe to begging with. Mmm I tried analyzing it, and I think some instruments are too... obnoxious. And by that I mean the violins are violating my ears. In my own playlist, I just took the instrumental versions, meaning half the melody was absent, which let you focus less on the song and more on the story. So the instrumental is meant to accompany the words of the book as if they were its lyrics. But when the instrumental includes the melody of the original lyrics, your brain wants to fill in the lyrics you already know because it's a song that plays every day on the internet. Therefore it becomes too much to read and fill in the lyrics at the same time. Why do I feel cringe tho? Maybe because they are too mainstream? Like I associate the song already with something in the modern world so it stops me from being able to enter the fictional one fully. And reality is cringe.
Let's see some examples:
Wildest dreams - Taylor Swift
Orchestra version -
It's not a bad song, it actually sounds medieval. I think the chorus trended for a reason. It's really well done, it feels really emotional. The start is also nice to listen to, well up to when the lyrics start...
HE'S SO TALL
I'm sorry but the violin by itself It's really aggressive. It sounds too loud compared to the base behind it, they don't really sound like one (like they did in the chorus). The violin really stands out and it's hard not to pay attention to it. Also, the notes don't really sound as smooth, which is normal because it tries to follow the syllables of the lyrics.
Then again, the song is not bad, if I lower my volume and strictly focus on it. But when I'm reading, writing, or daydreaming, it's really annoying. The melody screams the lyrics in my face I just feel the urge to mockingly recite them. I don't know how the show used it, so I'm curious to see if my opinion would change. So: To me, it's not a good song to use as a background soundtrack, since the melody of the lyrics makes my brain focus too hard on filling in the blanks. So I can't really focus on my daydream or what I'm reading.
Original Instrumental -
I think the advantage of Taylor swift songs is that they already sound like "old grand castle wood" if that makes any sense. So even if I am kinda sad this one doesn't have the ballroom orchestra feel to it, it still doesn't take you out of the "medieval" feeling.
Something that can become annoying is that most of the time pre-chorus are loops. Sometimes there are some additions that indicated to you that the song is progressing, but even those additions loop a few times, so it can become irritating when u focus on the song and lose track of where you are.
Is the chorus now? Oh no now! Hein no now! What, how is it still not now ?? Oh OK, there it is.
That essentially stems from the melody of the lyrics not being here. So you have maybe 3 or 4 lines you remember and they keep looping in your head, so it can become frustrating cuse you're annoyed at the fact you can't remember the lyrics.
But that is IF you focus on the song. When you don't, it becomes THE PERFECT soundtrack.
Sure sometimes the chorus happens at random times in the story or not in the place you wish it did like :
NOW IS THE INTENSE STARE, DO IT NOW.
But when that happens I usually just wait a few seconds and restart the part I was reading so it feels just right ♡ Of course a problem arises with long chapters, like what if the start of the chapter is light and cute but something dramatic happens at the end? With a song looping, it's not very efficient.
I think my solution to that I just to cut chapters more often, to really stick to one mood in one chapter. Following that logic, I think a few chapters could have the same song, that's how you build a soundtrack, after all, recurring songs for the same emotions. But then I think it ruins my idea of naming chapters after the song titles. Mmmm. I think, maybe I'll name the chapters that are better summarized by those songs AS the song title, and the rest is more up to me. Then again, I have a lot of songs that pretty much have the same vibe, so idk yet how it'll work. I think the plan, for now, is to write the chapters and compile songs when I find some.
A Draft
I think it's appropriate to end the rant with an example.
For this chapter, the song is the slowed version of the instrumental, since its referencing a later chapter where it explains the dream. So yes here "wildest dream" is taken literally and doesn't really match the lovesick lyrics, but it references characters that do fit the lyrics. Just in their worst moment.
ALSO, Why am I writing the end of arc 2 when I didn't even finish arc 1?
Idk, I do want my brain wants OK TT and I'm stuck because introducing characters smoothly is hard
